If you regularly find yourself transporting large amounts of cumbersome equipment, you’re going to need to invest in a quality landscape trailer.
While having a regular flat-bed truck can be a big help when helping a friend move, it just doesn’t have the storage capacity to routinely haul the equipment and materials you require for regular construction or landscaping work. Even with the cab removed, a flat bed truck just isn’t designed or equipped to move things like ride-on lawnmowers or rolls of peat. This is where a landscape trailer comes into play.
These trailers are long, flat hauling beds that hook onto the back of your truck. It is primarily used to reliably transport the various tools, equipment and small vehicles you need for landscaping work, though they are handy for a variety of other uses as well. While the standard trailer features short rails on either side and a single tall wire wall on the back (to prevent equipment from striking and damaging the back of your cab), there are a wide variety of trailers. Some feature short wooden walls on the sides, other features tall wire walls of equal height on all sides, while certain models are fully enclosed.
Deciding what level of enclosure you want on your trailer really depends on what you are using it for. If most of your equipment lays flat and isn’t stacked particularly high, or lays flat and is secure on its own (like tall, heavy bundles of two by fours) then you probably don’t need particularly high walls. However, if you’re dealing with looser materials that are likely to bang around in the back, it’s a good idea to make sure you have high and sturdy walls to keep everything in place. Finally, if you’re going to use your trailer in inclement weather or for display purposes, it’s a best to purchase a fully enclosed model.
Another key feature to consider when purchasing your trailer is its ramp. You want to make sure it comes with a sturdy ramp that securely locks into place and can handle at least a few hundred pounds- especially if you are riding a mower up and down it all day.
Whether you are using it to haul equipment, furniture, or even recreational ATVs, it’s important that you select the right landscape trailer for you. When you make the right choice, you’ll find there’s no better option for regularly transporting bulky, heavy items and materials- from fertilizers to motorcycles.
